Educate Me on how to use my camera

I have a 6mp Sony Cybershot that is a couple of years old.
I also have a tripod.
When I try to take pictures out of the AUTO mode, they never come out quite well, so I have just settled on using the AUTO.
I would like to be able tot ake some nicer pics with this camera, as I am positive it is capable of it, and I am far below exceeding its limits.

I don't want to become a professional or a guru, but some simpler tricks and tips on how to use balances, and ISO's, etc, would be greatly appreciated.
Ex. What are some settings to take great Day time pics? Night pics?

don't expect too much with your camera.

Your camera can't adjust shutter speed or aperture, so it's very hard to take something you want.

Get a decent DSLR with a good lens will do the job! BTW DSLR + lenses cost as much as your car mods... so be aware...

Composition goes a long way.

Find good angles, good spots, and remember to put your subject in one of the thirds. That should help quite a bit, just don't go overboard with angle, or anything really, it hurts the eyes.
