well

there are many places to look. for cars and SUVs in general. go to...

www.edmunds.com

www.nctd.com

those sites offer reviews dating back to 1994 so that should keep ya set. otherwise look around. those are just off the top of my head.good luck

I don't see how expecting and SUV are related.

I say get a wagon as well.

SUVs
- are a rip-off
- waste gas
- danger to others
- potential danger to self
- ugly
- high insurance
- heavy
- have terrible braking / handling

Really the only safety advantage they have is weight. If you hit another car, you will basically obliterate the other car and it's occupants. You will probably be fine. However if you hit wall it's a different story.

Dave, get your facts straight.

- SUVs are not a rip off
- my 3.2l m3 eats more gas than Edwins(Betray) 4.0l Grand Cherokee
- ohhh c'mon like you care about others, stop this BS
- I was in the roll over collision @ 100km/h in SUV, not a single scratch on all 5 passengers.
- there are ugly SUVs, but there are also a lot of nice ones
- high insurance??? yeah ok, call you agent then post
- heavy?? it is not a race car remember?
- handling?? it is not a race car remember?

I would say go with SUV, much more spaceous then station wagons.

- ok, ripoffs are more of a personal thing, fine. I find that they are
- I might, JeorgeBaptista might
- but you rolled over!
- ok, looks are subjective
- insurance: varies by broker - fine
- it may not be a race car, but acceleration, braking, and handling performance have safety implications too
- gas:
Volvo V70: 11L/100km city, 8L/100km highway
Ford Explorer: 16L/100km city, 11L/100km highway

You're right, the Explorer has 4.0 and the Volvo has a 2.4. Of course the Explorer has higher consumption. But is it worth it? Gas prices are going up these days.

As for your M3 and Betray's Jeep gas mileage - I don't know how you tested it - maybe real life figures differ from controlled test conditions. But MSN Autos reports 20/28 mpg city/hwy for your M3 and 16/20 mpg city/hwy for the Jeep.

Thanks for all the input guys!

I'm keeping the 84 318I, plan on fixing it up! (before all you haters start asking why I'm fixing a 20 year old 4 cyl... I have my reasons!).

With the wife having our son in July, the BMW would not be a pratical car with the baby...

I plan on buying an older SUV. Really leaning towards a 1990 Toyota 4 Runner. Figured that the prices are reasonable for the quality, all of the reviews I've read so far are good. Also, I need a SUV or Truck to haul around building suplys due to the fact I'm one of the few home owners (that I know of) that have bought an older house (80yrs old) as my 1st home. Man if you though maintaing a car was a pain, try an older home!.

I know that SUV burns more gas that the average car... Also I know what the limits of a truck like vehilce... I drove a Suzuki Samurai for 6yrs!!! I plan not to be like most other SUV drivers... I know the limits!

Would the 4 Runner be a good pick?
