engine thermostat

My 98 528i needs the thermostat replaced (as least thats what I suspect as the temp. gauge fails to reach dead center as it should). Is any harm done running the car with this faulty thermostat for a bit (cash strapped

).
I know it can't be great but will it really do any damage of any sorts?

stock open is better than close,your not going to have heat but it's going to be ok,termostat is only 40 buck,save the coolant and put it back in
