Balls On my chin! Laid off 2 days after taking my car into the shop!!!!

So I pull into work this morning only to find out our site got shut down! And I got laid off!

Here's the rant.

A lot of bullshit has been talked at work about work getting slow, the site shutting down this and that. But everyday work kept going strong, concrete and steel kept coming. So after 2 months of hearing bullshit from the guys I figured things would work out ok. So since it rained friday we left work at 7:30am. I figured since it was fairly warm It was a great day to take the bimmer into the body shop to begin its restoration! So I took the car into M-tricks for the car to be stripped down (carpet and all) Ordered 2 tires to mount on the RS's (so that the fenders could be properly pulled!

So this morning after I found out that I had been laid off I swung by the shop. So far the body shop hasnt touched my car. But I don't know whether or not I should pull the car out of the shop, or if i should take my chances and hope my union gets me a job soon! Right now I have enough to pay up front for the work being done on the car. But I'm worried about if something comes up and then I'll be screwed later on. I contacted the union and my rep said he was going to try getting me into the Donald trump tower downtown.

What do you guys think? My gut is telling me to bring the car back home. But the guys at the shop are all oh dont worry youll find a job soon, and if i cant pay all of it at once its ok. (Ive known these guys for a while.)

But then again i wanna get the car done and over with!

I think it's a question of variables right now. you know for certain that the car hasn't been touched. It's not the end of the world you can get the car re-done at any time.

What if the union leader is unable to find you a job in an timely manner?

I say pull the car out, don't want to jeoperodize your finances for it.

Ah shit! Sorry to hear this man! I remember you were predicting this a couple months ago, and you weren't sure if you were going to get the car done or not.

If you already went this far, and took the time to bring the car in to get done, don't dissapoint yourself, or your friends at the shop. You wanted to get it done badly, and your shop friends probably could use the work to keep them busy. I would go ahead with it. Spring is around the corner, you won't be out of work for much longer at all, and you want to enjoy your car too this spring! You worked hard all the years, might as well live life and enjoy yourself a little.

At the very worst, they said its okay for you to pay with installments when the job is complete. Just make some cutbacks in your lifestyle in other places where you can.

What I would do since you do have the money to pay up front already is to go ahead and have the work done on the car. Once they compete the work arrange payment installments with them despite you having the money to pay all at once. This way it will leave you with more money in had for a little bit longer just "incase". Arrange to pay it over a 2-3 month period for example and keep the money it the bank and don't spend it!

But in the end everyone's financial situation is different so weigh out your options good.

I think that's bad advice. Spring coming has nothing to do with the deeper reality that we're in bad financial times right now and work is becoming scarce for a lot of people. No matter how bad you want it, if it comes at the expense of putting food on your table, it's a bad decision. Having a nice ride is a luxury but if you can't afford it, you can't afford it. I'd wait to make sure I was gonna be sent to another jobsite, but that's just me...

six months without finding a job is not uncommon. Unless you're depending on UIC for some short term funds then do what a lot of others have said - take back the car and get it fixed later when you do have the funds.

(you probably know) I'm in the same industry as you and havent worked for 3 months. I had 4 interviews in my field as well and no bites, and time is dragging on. And this is building science/restoration, not new construction like you're in... Luckily I'm doing some CAD work from home.

I'm taking my car off insurance too right now. I barely drove it this month.

There are quite a few sites on hold aren't there? I remember even in September the super at One St. Thomas condo at Bay/Bloor said he was looking for a job cause they were letting him go.

Right now we're in the middle of the huge wave with construction ppl battling for the same sites that are left. Who knows if summer will pick up.

Dude, I would suggest you pull it out of the shop and wait for things to pick up and you get another steady job before you take it back. Just my 2cents

+1. My brother is working in Scotia tower next to the Trump. The whole buidling is saying that Trump is pulling out. I am not joking. I would be very very careful here. Also his project is very shady on how everything is going very slow.

1989 economic Slow down took all the way until 1995-6 to recover fully. This one is even worse. Don't let Media propaganda make you feel better.
