rear end squirlly at higher speeds
so either i'm going cray or i'm going crazy.
roads are salty cold a little wet in certain areas.
4th and 5th gear around 100km/h while changing lanes and getting on the gas and the back end starts fishtailing. i have dunlop winter tires, alignment done in the summer with rtabs, tires are 225/50-17.
any ideas? or is it i guess normal?
posted this on m3forum also. (people are saying subframe or rtabs (rear trailing arm bushings)
i replied with:
i got powerflex rtabs done in like august. so for them to be done already i'll be freaking.
for my subframe to be gone (with no suspension or engine mods) i'll be freaking.
going around corners is fine (tail kicks out only cause i'm on the gas coming out of it and its wet and cold). but what scares me is getting the rear end to wiggle on the highway while try to pass people. hmmmm.

thats what was recommended from tire rack.. thats why i'm thinking having 225 on all 4 might cause some weird oversteer.
does anyone have any ideas on whats going on?
i'm praying its not the rear sub frame.

Have you checked your rear tire tread lately (regardless of how "new" they are)? I notice my E46 feeling "floaty" these past few frigidly cold days when doing highway speeds. I think it's just that there's a thin layer of black ice on the roads because the salt just doesn't quite melt it at -20+. I'm running new 17" Blizzak LM-22 RFT's.

tread is good. second season on dunlop wintersports.
floaty is a good word for it. getting on the power and changing lanes and the rear just kinda hovers.

I'm on my 4th winter on Dunlop Wintersports. I notice all of the symptoms you mentioned. Just trying to make it to April!

Might sound stupid, but have you checked tire pressure lately? It drops a lot in winter, and i noticed it can have a LOT of negatice effects on handling...I had the same problem 2 weeks ago, the back would feel loose at both low and high speed.

It's probably just a bit of ice on the road. I wouldn't worry about it, especially if you said you couldn't reproduce the issue at will today. Sounds like a situational thing w/ the cold weather.
Just drive with a bit more caution. I've also noticed that these RWD cars get very "squiggly" when changing lanes on the highway at speed in wet/ice/snowy conditions. It's the nature of the beast.

Throw two bags (or boxes) of sand in your trunk. keep those tires down. make sure the bags dont roll around (this is important).
