WTF? How is it possible to even have enough traction to sustain a 0-60 launch in one second?!

The car takes off in first gear, then shifts into second gear at 8,200 rpm. The car is designed to transfer power from the engine to the wheels in a way that promotes traction and prevents spinning at takeoff.
That means that as quick as you can say "one Mississippi," Saboury's Corvette goes from the starting line to 60 feet, or a distance of nearly two-thirds the length of a regulation basketball court. At takeoff, its front tires go airborne.

Weeeeeeeeeell, the car may be technically street legal but I doubt the tires it did the record with are street legal.

well magnus if you read the article you would have found out that the owner/driver/racer, likes drag strips, and his dream was to build a car that could do the quarter mile in the 6 second mark. which is what he acheived.
That being said, there are many american cars that are superb at "roads with turns", infact I think it was on Discovery channel where a Corvette beat a ferari at the track.

Yes, but that test was against a brand new Z06 vs a dated 360 modena. They shoould have used a 430...that would have made more sense.

Some states might have an emissions exemption for older/classic cars.
They have tires like Mickey Thompson ET's that are DOT compliant and thus street legal.
Steet legal or not, I would not want to be driving that around town. A nine second car is already quite the malcontent on the road.
But yeah, it is quite the accomplishment to have done that to an old shell. Props to the obvious committment and money put into this project!
