Let:
x = # of humans
y = # of horses
so:
x + y = 74
2x + 4y = 196
so:
(-2)[x + y = 74]
2x + 4y = 196
so:
-2x -2y = -148
2x + 4y = 196
Add the 2 equations:
2y = (196-148)
2y=48
so
y = # of horses = 24 horses
&
x = # of humans = 74-24 = 50 people

I was doing problems like this 10 years ago so no homework here.
Judging by some of your posts I'm sure you're doing (or should be) them now..too bad you can't.

lol .. im done school long ago. Thats just basic algebra and I dont go post it on car forums because I think its "fun" or "cool" .. so why are you posting it?

I've never seen a variable being placed in a decimal digit before... if that is a typo, this is a very easy equation to solve

x = -7 or +5.
