Thinking of buying a 1997-2000 740il

Whats happening gentlemen,

ok so i need to pick the brains of the 7 series drivers on this board. Im looking at several different 740's i just want to know what year would be the better buy, as in less 'gremlins' in the car. I saw a 97 yesterday that was SWEET, just had 200k and i want something along the lines of between 120-150k. Also how are they on gas? ive been told they have an 80 litre tank (massive) but i guess its just on how you drive the car. How is the reliability of the car/engine?? please let me know, or any input you have would be great.

I have a 2000, but I would say 2001 would be the best bet since it was the last shape for the E38's(if that is what you are looking for) and you get the facelifted clear corners all around. these cars have a 100 litre tank and are as good on gas as you are on the accelerator. As for reliability, the engines are pretty bullet proof as long as they have been cared for

What about the automatic transmission? I am also thinking of getting one... just worried the tranny will blow up on me...

My '00 e38 is a pleasure to drive. Two more weeks and she'll see pavement once again. Hwy is around 8.9 l/100; city 12-15 l/100. 2001 will give you monochromatic colour below the sheet metal. Yes it may cost more to operate (prem gas), but if you do highway cruising it's a dream.
