I think I'm obsessed, is there a cure?

I did it again yesterday, I went out and bought another E30, after just buying one about a month earlier. I can't help myself, does anyone know if there is a cure to this madness??

Any way what I bought yesterday is a new winter beater, it's an '89 325iX but the only thing is it has an automatic trans, but I got the car for almost nothing so I was thinking of doing a 5sp swap in it. I have all the parts to do the conversion, but I'm wondering if anyone else has done the swap in an iX before, and is so is there any special things I need to know.

Pics....

From what I gather all e30's are built to be manual and when they put an auto tranny in them they have to add an extra wiring harness, so there will be a bunch of wiring that won't be connected to anything after the swap. I don't know if any reprogramming will have to be done, might want to look into that.

i havent done one yet, but I know Chris325ix on e30tech did his a few years ago. I don't think its too different from a normal e30, as long as you have all the specific parts, like a trans and xfercase from a 5spd IX

forgot to mention, no there is no cure, im going to look at another tomorrow, would be the 5th for me

I'd keep a winter iX as an auto, and I'm the first to promote a manually tranny anyday. But for winter and 4wd, auto makes for a great DD.

Well it's good to know that I'm not the only sick one on this forum

But before I do the swap I really want to make sure there wont be any wiring issues. As I mentioned earlier I do have all the specific parts needed for the swap like Xcase, tranny, shifter, master cylinder, clutch pedal, drive shaft, etc, but I was wondering if the different gear ratio's in the diffs will make any difference.

My dad is also trying to convince me to leave it as an automatic for a winter beater/DD, but I guess time will tell, it just depends what I feel like working on or what I have to work on.

^^ That's really awesome that you have all the parts. If time was no barrier, I don't see why you wouldn't do the swap then. Sure would be fun in the snow!

the diff gear ratios will give you slightly worse economy. and i mean slightly. from using 4.10s with the 5spd, youd be doing ~2890rpm instead of ~2640rpm at 100km/h(based on 24in tires)
it would pull quite a bit more in the lower end though.
but it would still work, they are bolt in replacement.
sorting out your speedo might be fun though

I'm not to worried about the slightly worse economy, but I do enjoy the fact that there would be more pull in the lower end.

why do you think the speedo would be affected?, since the speed sensor is on the rear diff I didn't think it would affect anything, but I could be wrong.

So did you end up picking up the iX Touring?, I seen it in the auto trader, it looked pretty sweet.

Cool, ya I drove it back from Toronto, and it ran great, I've been driving it around now for a few days and it's running like a top. Any idea how many km's are on that head?, and also any idea how many km's are on that timing belt?
