Advice on X5
Hey guys,
well the wife wants to get an X5 and I wanna know what years and models to stay away from. Which ones have the most problems and which are the best for reliability. My wife will drive it most of the time but I will be pulling waverunners and small boats with it for recreational fun. So I think I have ruled out the 3.0 but I don't think I need to go as big as the 4.8. Which leaves me with the 4.4 and the 4.6. Can anyone suggest which year and engine I should go with and or which years I should steer clear of?
Thanks.

The ONLY year that the 4.4 was rated as anything near average reliability was the '05. And even still, it's not great.
The 3.0 was average from '03-'06.
You don't want to hear this, but the Acura RDX, Infinity FX, Lexus RX, and so on are all much better choices if you want a reliable SUV.

Very true. The X5 drives much greater than most of the competition though. I do like Infiniti FX45 (what a beast).

Wow...thats crazy. Any idea whats so unreliable about them? Maybe it's time to shop around to different manufactuers for an SUV.
Thanks Jay.

i went through the samething when i was buying my x5, i ended up getting a 2003 x5 4.4i, had the car for about 2 years, still runs solid. I've done some maintenance on the car, but so far its been very reliable. When i was researching, people were saying get 2003 or above. 2005 if you got the cash.

One thing i know about the 4.4 is the self-leveling rear suspension. 3.0 didn't have this feautre, just regular shocks.
