I just bought a 2001 bmw 540i/6 M package and i love it. The most common issues with the car are cooling issues so check that the water pump, rad...etc were done. Also check the suspension such as control arms, ball joints....etc. Another issue that all of them have is dead pixels on the cluster HUD and for the radio display, but this can be covered by bmw if you email them since so many people have the issue. Another 2 major issues is the O2 sensor and cat converter.

I would highly suggest going to bimmerforums.com and the 540 section, its very active and you'll find everything you need there so you know what you're getting yourself into.

The E39s do have some weaknesses, how good it is... is dependent on what you're looking for and your acceptance of BMW engineering compared to other manufacturers. If the car has been maintained and some of the weaknerss have been addressed then you should be OK keeping up with the maintenance but otherwise... . The main issue that I have with my car is with the rate that it "eats" tires even after several alignments and suspension checks. The tire bill is as much as my track car.

2001 is what you'll shoot for. 2000 is just before the goodies.

If you find it with 150,000 then it's pretty low.

I had the same problem until I found a shop that can do the job properly and BMW dealers were not the ones. I went through 2 sets of tires until I found the right shop. After the alignment my tires lasted well over 80,000km with no sign of abnormal wear.

I think the parts are not too costly, but the labour cost can be.... esp if you use the BMW dealer. I worked on mine myself and saved a lot. I would buy another for sure!!

It's a horrible car. Don't get it

I had one for 5 years and loved it. You may want to tell your wallet to bend over though because you will spend good money on repairs and maintenance.

I drove mine for 175,000km before I had to spend money on it. Rear window dropped. Cost for repair under $175. I can do the same repair now for $2.

Well at 205,000km the crank head bolt snapped off and that was it.

Your car was probably new when you got it. My 97 540 was 6 years old and had 149k on the clock when I bought it. It had over 350k on it when I got rid of it. I was spending $3000/yr maintaining it. This includes wear and tear items like tires and brakes to items like wheel hubs, bearings, window regulators, various sensors, cats, and a/c. Souvrain is looking at an 8 or 9 year old with 150k on it. His experience will probably be closer to mine than yours.

Ahh but you got 200k out of her, I can't say you got your moneys worth but if you liked/loved the car thats not bad at all.

^ I didn't get my money's worth, but I'm not complaining much either. The experience was worth it!

Even if it costs more than expected to maintain, the driving experience will be worth it. And it will still cost less than a newer Accord/Camry - boooooorrrrring

I kept records of my maintenance. I can email you a copy if you want to see.
