Question disabling DRL, dash lights always on

i have two beefs with my '90 e30 325i.

1- day light running lights. i want to disable them, they are so annoying because they arent real daylight running lights, they just turn on the lows and turn on the tail lights also. not necessary in the day. how do i disable this?

2- dash lighting always on! what's up with that? i dont need my cluster + buttons illuminated unless it's night and i turn on my lights. how do i fix that?

thansk for the tips

they're the same problem. Fix your DRL, your dash lighting will turn off. Mine is a US car, no DRL

exactly.

does anyone know where the wiring for the headlights runs, and what could possibly activate DRL?

I suspect its the actual light switch. That's just a hunch though.

I tryed to change the light switch on my friends '91 318, it didn't do anything. I also tryed a light switch from a euro e30, still didn't do anything, so I have reason to believe it is not related to the light switch. Its something in the wiring under the dash.

you are correct. i also swapped in a switch from a '89 that had no DRL and failed!

i opened the switches, they are identical. i suspect a relay under the dash somewhere. but where?

Must have a light control module like the e34. Did you google it or search on e30tech / r3v?

I did search on both r3v and e30tech way back when... But since their cars are US spec, their wiring diagrams are for non DRL cars. And I'm too noobie for anything electrical related so I gave up

yes i did quite a bit, i only found a fuzzy wiring diagram

i believe the e30 doesnt have a light control module. normally that module reduces the light strength for DRL. but on the e30, they are just as bright on or off.

i think the factory just found a short cut for canada to make it legal since it was the last 2 years they made the e30 anyway. now i need to find a way to undo the shortcut.

Edumacate me a bit on how to read these diagrams... if the diode is gone, wouldn't the whole light system not work?
