E39 and Other bimmers Speakers Q's...

Hello there, I'm new to the forum here...
I'm looking towards making some changes with my audio in my E39...
since it sucks big time, And since I'm a beginner in this area, I was wondering
about couple of things...

1.Is there a universal size to car speakers or do they come in different sizes and shapes lol ?... and are the front(door) speakers
are usually smaller than the ones in the rear deck/roof (sedan/wagon)...

2.and now basicly the same question just only about the E39 model...
what are the sizes of the speakers in there?... and what kind/brand of speakers u would suggest to swap them with?....
