exclusive does not do work, they may still detail and can send your car out to get painted. Don't be fooled by all the flashy cars.

We've all said it a few times now, go check out autovation

Tell us what you need to get done Adam and it would make it easier to recommend a shop. Ie. if you're getting turbo stuff done, I would recommend someone different then if you were getting normal stuff like window regulators done.

'normal stuff '

just need to get some 'written estimates' on the costs of repairing normal car things

-lower timing cover gasket
-window motor -reg replacement costs
-repairing the drivers door card & intermittent short
-fixing the short in my fan wiring
-rehang my pass side front bumper clip
-etc

ya know things some guy couldn't fix properly or at all in 6 months,
but still managed to get $3700 for it!?

how'd that happen? oh yeah i was under the threat of possibly being charged if i didn't pay.

so now i must sue. I must get on this

duss would make the most accurate & expensive estimates,
but rudy will charge like $180+ for it!!

As you say, Rudy Duss is gonna be the most expensive, but I would be willing to bet he will do it right, and have it done in 2 days. He'd be my first recommendation, and I would say pay the little extra, and be done with it!

Next I would say give Todd a call at autobahn tuning. He knows his stuff when it comes to bimmers, and his rate is reasonable. 60/hr I believe. My father goes to him mostly for his Z3, but has recently convinced him to do work on his honda and ford focus and even trusted him to do some minor work on his prized '68 firebird. Even though this guy is a Bimmmer/Audi/Porsche specialist. Shows he's a pretty versatile mech.

I've never used him personally, but I've chatted with him a few times, and he's definitely a very competent mechanic. His only downfall is his time. He sometimes overloads himself with work, and as a result it takes longer to get bigger jobs done. Phil (Philboski) can tell you more about that, his car was there quite some time for a timing cover replacement on his 540 (admittedly much harder job than on an m42 though I would think)

When I say longer, I mean a couple of weeks though, not months like your previous mechs.

And then there is of course Autovation, as Lee suggested. I've heard nothing but good things.

I would recommend Todd highly on both quality of work and rate (it was $65/hour when I went there, and he charged for the time he estimated, not for the book rate), but he was lousy at getting the car into the shop when promised, and letting me know that there would be a delay. He would say "I'll be getting it in the shop on Wednesday," and when I called on Thursday, it hadn't been in the shop yet. This happened a few times. His excuse? Lots of snow tires to install, and it would be better for him to anger one customer than 10. Not exactly winning customer service, and extremely frustrating, but certainly better than your situation.

That said, I will likely go there for my next oil change. He can do it with the appropriate BMW LL-rated oil for cheaper than I can buy the oil alone.
