Anything will fit given enough time, money and skill. Others have done this swap though.
Here's one:

It will only fit if you sell your TCD kit to me
Yes it will fit, you will need some kind of standalone engine management to run it though.
Most of the swap parts to fit the motor physically in the e30 engine bay would be the same as an m50 swap(oil pan, mounts, 5-spd transmission, driveshaft)

3-5 into the electric? Just do VEMS standalone for less than $1500.

Let's be clear: this would be one of the most advanced engine swaps done, period. If you don't already know, then don't bother.

What do you mean By that?
Have you ever driven an SMG tranny?
We are not talking about your chessy ass steptronic on your 3 series.

Yes, I have, yes I know what a SMG is.
What I meant is if you don't already know how you're going to 'handle' installing and getting a SMG working, don't bother. I imagine there is considerable work to get the SMG operating, so I suppose the original estimate for electrics was probably more accurate. $1.5K for engine, another $? for electronic control of the SMG.
If you are posting for ideas on how to get the SMG to work in an E30, then I would hazard you probably don't have enough experience to do this swap. I certainly don't. Forgive me if I'm wrong, maybe you have intimate knowledge of the sequential shifter system, engine rev mating controls, etc.
Not sure I really like your tone, but maybe I'm just reading your response wrong. Why would you think I'd own an automatic? Now THAT'S insulting.

I think I misunderstood what you said.
I didn't mean to be insulting.

Haha, no problems.
In any case, the SMG would be a monumental amount of work. Like, WAY more than it would be worth. The e30 is just not worthwhile.
Edit: sacrilegious, I know.

If you can get the motor for $2500 with a tranny that's a very good deal, because it's easily worth double that, so if I were you I'd buy it before someone else does.
And no, you don't want to bother with the SMG. You'll pretty much need to convert your entire E30 electronics to E46 electronics to work. If you're up for such a feat I doubt it since you're asking if an S54 will fit into an E30. Not to mention the cost of ALL the electronics from an E46 M3. Plus there will be some fabrication involved. It's an easy $10k project believe me.
You're better off getting the motor and running a stand alone as someone already mentioned.

I actually don’t like the SMG transmission.
What I’m I going to do for a tranny?
