Lately, I have been using 2 cameras. From the photo of the laptop down, were taken with my friends Nikon D60. Any photos previous to the laptop were taken with a Nikon L100, which is a point and shoot camera. I like the Nikon L series, or P series of camera, but they are not pocket sized. Nikon makes a pocket size point and shoot that I really want, S4100, or S3100. Canon point ant shoots are really good too, as well as Sony.
If your looking to get into photography as a fun thing, and want a DSLR, Canon Rebel t2i, or the Nikon D3100. I'm not a fan of the D3100 though, I'm used to the older Nikons, like the D40, and D60, but its a good cheep camera.
Hope I didn't bore you, and I hope this gives you some direction. Maybe some other people will chime in with some different words.

If your looking at a DSLR then the best thing for you to do is actually go to a shop and hold the nikons and Canons side by side. You'll notice there is a masive difference in ergonomics between the two brands. I personally dont like the possition of the shutter release button on the nikons, I prefer the Canon, same with the actual grip and eye piece.
Everyone is different though.
Most important thing will be the quality of glass (lens) used.
as your just getting into it, id go with a rebel series, even an older one such as the Xsi (what i have) or the nikon equivelent
you can get them really cheap now, then use the saved cash for a good lens.
if you want a compact camera with the abilities to control aperture and shutter speed, look into the canon G11 or G12.

Very good point Hay.
Actually, Because I like how Nikon works, and how the feel, I would go with a Nikon D40. It's older, but will still work awesome, and a great beginner DSLR. I have heard horror stories of used Canons breaking, and even single owner Canons crapping out too. I want a Canon, but I'm afraid, since my dad had one too, and it crapped out. Search ebay for good deals on all used cameras.

No prob. What you could do, to decide what you like, is get a 2GB SD card, and take to places you go when looking for a camera. Stick the card in a camera your looking at, take a few shots, go back home, or to a computer in Future Shop or Best Buy, and see what you like best.
