just boot your computer with the windows XP cd and let it reformat your computer into ntfs.
if you just follow the instructions it's pretty easy...microsoft designs it that way.

most viruses these days dont attack the bootsector or fat, so I would have to say yes.
choose to do a full format and not the quick format just to be sure though. It takes longer, but you'll get better performance from the harddrive with the full format

Get a Windows 98 boot floopy. Select no CD Rom support type

fdisk /mbr

and then do a format c: /q

That should wipe the master boot record and format your PC using FAT32.

Reboot and boot off the XP cd and follow the instructions to install off partition 0:1 .

if you have a virus, why not just remove it with anti-virus software?

chances are, its on your e-mail or something, and it will propagate to your system again.

only if its crippled your pc and theirs no way to remove it, then i'd say re-do it.

here the cleanest way to wipe out your drive.

1) create a win95/98 bootup diskette with fdisk.exe
2) fdisk /mbr (this will ensure u wipe out your master boot record)
3) remove diskette, reboot.
3) insert your XP CD in your cdrom drive (you may have to change the startup sequence on the BIOS to make your CD is Bootable)
4) then follow the instructions to format the drive. make sure you choose NTFS and ensure you do a full format (NOT a quick format).

Thats it....

a quick format WILL wipe everything on that partition but if you really want to be sure delete the parition first and then repartition and format.

yes, your right nzer, i forgot that very important step. delete the partition and re-create it, then proceed with step 3 (the 2nd step 3)
