Want to buy a 7, which gen? 01 or 02

Hi guys! I have had two E34 (535 and a 525) I am looking to upgrade and wanted to go 7. I have looked at some 2000/2001 740's and a 2002 745li. My question is maintenance and reliability. Now I realize it's quite subjective and really the '02 is such a different car! I love the look of the new '02 and up body, to me the 00/01 feels like a bigger e34. They will all be out of warranty so are there things I should look for or avoid?

Thanks for any input.

go to the 7 series section, read the FAQ's.
You are welcome.
BTW, I would get an M5 instead.

doesn't sound like you're too excited about the car if you have to ask people which generation to buy. doesn't one stir your excitement more than the other?

go with the newer model.

I might be a little biased, but, I'd give the edge to the e38. ... I STILL haven't had the pleasure of driving an e65/66, so I can't really give a great review on that car. While the e65/66 styling has grown on me to the point that I think it's a great looking car ... with the e38 it was love at first sight.

Apart from just aesthetic appeal, the e38 (as I'm sure is the case with the newer models) is ridiculously comfortable, and is a blast to drive - even given it's size.

When comparing an '01 with an '02, your looking at the e38 at the height of it's existence, next to the e65/66 at it's inception. I know the '02 had issues, but most of them were software related that should have been fixed by now.

Anyway, as I see it, if you're looking for more technology and the prestige of driving a newer model flagship BMW - then go with the '02. If those two things aren't important to you, then go with the '01.

I'm always toying with the thought of selling my '01, but can never seem to actually go through with it. If you're interested, send me a PM ... I may be persuaded.

your post pretty much tells us you want the newer gen one...

but i would go e38 all the way - they look so damn good, and so so cheap now.

Watch James bond "tomorrow never dies" and then go buy an e38 for 5 gees

If your going for the E65/66 stay away from 2002's, grab a late model 2003 and up.
I still have warranty on my ride (6yrs/160000kms), all and all I would not drive this gen. without a warranty. Way too much shit to go wrong.

FYI. Maintenance is very expensive unless you have a good shop that will take care of you.
7 series also depreciate way lower then 5's or 3 series.

Enjoy

Thanks for all the input. I am not a mechanical newbie but can do all the simple stuff like brakes, etc....I am a regular of Bruno so the mechanics does not scare me. It seems that the '02's are starting to drop like crazy. I do commute from K-W to mississauga every day so fuel consumption is a bit of a concern. hhmmmm, how bad are these cars for the electronics?

Mine? Been to dealer 5 times since I got the car last Nov. If you want a E65/66 get as new as possible and one with warranty, good luck.

I tell people not to get this car
Bye Bye Bimmer after warranty
