2.93 Open diff or stock 3.23 LSD?

Hey guys, which is the better diff to go with in your opinion? I'm looking at an M3 with around 340whp and the owner is offering either of these diffs with the car. He felt the 3.23 was too short and would choose the 2.93. I would rather run a LSD, but like the idea of having a lower cruise speed as I do quite a bit of highway driving. We both thought the best idea is to run the 2.93 and switch it to a LSD, if possible. Opinions?

LSD all the way. Just get the 3.23 then sell it and get the one you want with LSD.

I have a 3.23 LSD, and the ratio is more than plenty.

Stick with the 3.23, because you get LSD out of the package too.

I had no idea there was a diff with LSD in that ratio. Talk about rare!

To the OP, take the LSD. You'll be kicking yourself if you don't.

It was only available on canadian cars, only for the first half of 96 328's, as an option. After that, they phased it out in favour of traction control.

hmmm I looked into it a little further and am wondering about a custom 2.93 LSD. The guy at diffsonline.com said he thinks a 2.93 LSD would sacrifice a little too much performance and recommends sticking with the 3.23.

Maroli, are inferring a possible trade?

3.23 all the way. You won't sacrifice anything on the highway. I've had a 2.93, 3.15 and 3.38 all on my car at different times. I couldn't stand the 2.93, and I'll never let go of the 3.38 which is currently installed. The LSD also makes a HUGE difference if you do any sort of spirited driving.

2.93 open diff is only as good as scrap metal. I have 340whp (maybe even more now) + 3.23 diff and it's not short at all. If anything, I want 3.46.
2.93 lsd only good on 500+ turbo cars in my opinion.

Get the 3.23 LSD and see how you like it. You could always sell/trade for a 3.15 LSD.

really? see, I drive a lot on the highway and I like the fact that 3000 rpm keeps me slightly over 120kmph.

not to mention with a 3.38 I can still get over 700km/tank, I didn't notice much of a penalty going to a shorter diff, sure the engine revs higher but it's not under as much load either.
