Engine overheats ... how to check if the clutch fan works?

Bentley says that with the engine cold and off, you should be able to spin the fan with slight resistance. Nothing else. How do I know it works or doesn't? Any other tests to sort it out?

What is a common issue with M20s overheating??? Trying to get my 325is on the road and ready for Bimmercruise.

Take it for a spin, when you're at idle the car will over heat, than when you get up to speed it should cool down. That's one way to check it out.

Beware though, if you walk into a parts source and you have a clueless attendant helping you, If you say clutch fan instead of fan clutch you'll get a totally different part.

I don't think M20's have an overheating issue... mine and every other one I've ever seen runs below the half mark on the temp gauge..

Are you sure it's the fan? Does your car only overheat while idling/standing?

Try the same thing, only shut the car off when it gets to operating temp, and see if the fan spins freely. It should have significant resistance if it's working right.

I've never tried this, but I've read about the newspaper shred test.. Start the car and roll up a newspaper. Stick it into the turning fan. If the clutch is engaging enough to cool the car it should shred the paper. If you can stop the fan with the paper; new fan clutch time.

Just make sure that the car is warmed up first.

I think it is the fan; spins with slight resistance when cold but without ANY resistance (freewheels) when hot!

Anyone have a good one I can buy?

Good find! I just bought one on ebay... they pop up now and again, or you can buy the clutch itself for about $60.

As mentioned before, if it overheats at idle fan issues. You can jump the AC fan if you're in traffic. Look at the diagram and jump two wires of the temp switch on the right side of the rad. I don't remember the exact colors. One of them is ground and the other two are low and high speed ac fan

Actually about $130 when I called and they are special order not-returnable.
