Spraybooth rental? maaco, fairdeal experiences?

Ok, before you start flaming me

A) this isn't for the e36, which has bad paint anyway
B) dont tell me to take it to european/autopia/etc. I know those places paint well. I also know the cost of having a place like that paint my e30 will cost more than the car. NOT HAPPENING.

So, pretty much i have it down to this. I'm going to try to polish the paint. If it comes out good, i'm gonna paint the hood and both bumpers, and leave the rest of the paint OEM.

However, i think that this paint is too far beyond repair, so i'm probably going to have to paint it.

I painted some of my e36 myself, and although its definatly not show quality, its close enough for me. However, my buddy with the bodyshop closed down. so

Does anyone know where i can rent a spraybooth? between my friends and i, i have all the equipment i need, except the actual booth itself

If i dont do that, what i'm most likley going to do is prep the car myself, then send it to maaco/fairdeal/etc. Some cheapie place. I've been told by people IN the autobody industry that maaco's paint application process is actually pretty good. And because i'd be doing the prep myself, their shitty prep work wont come into play.

I'm open to suggestions, but this paintjob has to be dirt cheap. Maaco with me doing the prep will, from my research, with me doing the prep myself, cost around 500$. Fairdeal will be less.

I'm not gonna spend over 1000$ on paint under ANY circumstances, but apart from that, suggestions are appreciated.

The car will be repainted OEM red, which is what it is now.
I'm painting the car 20% for looks, 80% because i have a rust free e30 and i want to keep it that way.

maaco is known for its bad quality but for the price they charge, it isnt really bad.

As Propr'one said, if you do the prep work good enough, laying the paint should be very easy. Everything is on the prepwork, 80% prepwork and 20% actual paint work.

Good luck!

Do you have a garage or a big space you can use?

Why not make your own paint booth.

Wont be the best, but im sure it would be better than no paint booth.

A professional spary boot rents for $80/first houre, and $50 after that...I think you will spend more on time and materials making your own!

Why would your rent and neighbors hate you? It just smells like body paint.... hahaha Plus if your smart pipe it up to the roof, and let the wind pick it up and carry it away. Hehehe

Yes prepwork is VERY important, and make sure you do one hell or a prep work like get a grease remover spray, and spary down the item. Make it dry, and 3 layers of primer and wetsand in each stage. Working from coarse to finer grades like 2000 grit and using a sanding block.

just get one of those places that rents tents for parties to come set up a closed tent on your property and paint your car in there. You can probably even rent a circulation fan from them as well to pull the air out of the tent.

Trying to return a white tent that is suddenly pink will be fun

^^For a spraybooth rental or to have him paint it after i do prep?
I will be calling getting quotes in about 3-4 weeks when i'm ready to get the e30 out of storage, i'm assuming most places will want to see the car (although i really dont know why, if i'm doing all the prep).

Should i really primer the car? Even if i'm just scuffing the existing paint?

jer, my e30 is brilliantrot (red)

steve, you clearly know the procedures for painting. I worked in a bodyshop when i was younger, and although wetsanding will make the final product look a lot better, you definatly dont need to wetsand after every coat. At the end of the day, this is a WINTER car. a winter ONLY car. Doesn't have to be show quality.
