1998 BMW 528i question

Hey all,
I am completely new to this forum/website and fairly new to the BMW scene and jsut have a few questions. I am soon to acquire my moms 1998 528i, and want to know what if anything i can do with this car or if it is jsut a lost cause.. The car in in fairly good condition, has a few rust spots showing through but nothing to serious ( i hope to tackle this job with the help of some friends who have some bodywork experience). The engine mechanically is good starts and runs fine, it had an overheating problem but we took care of it a while back (replaced the radiator, thermostat and a few other components) and has been kept up to date with routine service. The car has about 245,000 km on it, i was just wondering if when i do acquire the car it would be worht keeping and working on or if it would be better jsut to sell for whatever i can get for it which i don't thik will be very much. Basically what I am askign is how much would it roughly cost to keep things in working order(and have some performance mods) added to the car? or if replacign the engine would be a better idea.
I don't really know how to come at this but am willign to take in any information offered!
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!!
thanks!

The 2.8L in your car is a pretty solid motor that has been proven time and time again.
If it has infact been well maintained like you say(although the overheating worries me) it will be only breaking in at 250K.

As far as what you can do to the car, you can either do performance upgrades which are the same as any e36 328(Cams, chip, pulley, etc), or you can focus on appearence. The options for that are endless.
You didn't mention if it was stick or Auto. If it is Auto, you *may* experience failure if it has never been flushed, etc, but if it is stick, worst case a clutch in the future, depending on how you drive.

You can also lower the car, improve its handling, etc, etc. BMW parts are pretty interchangeable in some cases, so you have a lot of options. It really depends on how you want to approach it.

Thanks for the info...and yeah i know the engine is a very reliable and strong engine..the overheating issue was fixed lie ka year ago and havent had a problem since...it is auto which is a bit of a downside and that is one of the m ain reasons i don't know whether i want to keep it or sell it and get another bmw in stick...but the problem is i don't think i'll get much for the 528 or at least as much as i would like...and a transmission swap for a 5spd is a bit out of the budget...first things first i would most likely put an ECU chip in it as well as transmission software if availabe...and also throw in some suspension upgrades. The car won't be driven much durign the process of me working on it..but thanks again for the info!!!

I'd sell it. It doesn't sound like you want it that much, and an auto with 245k is an expensive timebomb.

don't get me wrong i love the car, it is decent on gas, handles great, and e39's are one of my favorite body styles, auto ..yes is a turn off..but you make a solid point, and i know the electrical on the car kind of has a mindo f its own. at one point the passenger sun visor when opened and illuminated would shut the radio off....

in that case how much would you guess i could get for it?

decisions decisions

I have no idea what it's worth, start by checking Trader.

If you really want an E39, get a 530i manual. That's a reliable model that has everything you want.

BTW, get used to 540i guys telling you to buy one of those. It'll cost you at least twice as much in maintenance and headaches while sucking back a lot more gas. Sure it's faster, but it's really not worth the tradeoffs.

And just totally ignore those M5 guys too while you're at it.

The best trade off would be, you selling the 528i and adding some cash for the 530i. I don't want to put your car down, but most 528i are beaten to death.

What a stupid assumption. Care to elaborate?

It's very hard to find a clean 528 as it is with low clicks. How clean can it be with 250k. As Jay said, there are some things that will tick off in no time. Trany job plus some other few things will get you in late model 530 e39, money wise. At the end after all that money is spent on, 530 would still be a better car. That is mine opinion. Why risk with high mileage car and auto tranny. Some 528i that are nice will cost almost as 530i.

How much would you want for your 528i? I have one with 185k its pretty solid but it is starting to ride rough so time for a new suspension i think.

And it's pretty clean
