BMW 540i Engine Problem

I have a 1998 BMW 540i and every time the engine is started, there's a loud clicking noise coming from one of the valves. Just curious if anyone has had this problem before or knows what it may be? Thanks!

does it just happen on startup or does it continue on while it's running?

if it continues while it's running, then it could be a collapsed hydraulic lifter.

If it's just at startup, it could be lack of oil, or just simple vanos rattle.

It continues while running. If it ends up being a collapsed hydraulic lifter should I replace them all?

it could be coolant in the block which is letting the oil lubricate and causing friction

could be a lifter but could also be worn out timing chain tensioner, once the plastic is worn out enough it runs out of the ability to keep tension on the chain and the chain makes noise while slapping the tensioner. But that would be faint on start up, then get worse as the oil heats up, the hotter the oil gets the more the oil pressure drops.

Would anyone know how much this would roughly cost? Should I take it to the dealership and have them fix it? I currently take my car to Engineered Automotive and i think there a little more expensive than the dealership!

take it to RMP. they'll be straight with you. I had a similar noise that came from the front of both banks....probably a different issue than yours.

Self repairing problems are always the best.
