Pellet guns?

My brother was a marksman during his high school years and has a few riffles, so last week I got him a pellet gun as a gift.

He was shooting at paper targets in his backyard when a cruiser drove by, it turned out that one of those guys writing parking tickets called them after he saw what was happening.

Another cruiser came from the opposite direction and 4 cops came into the backyard, guns drawn.

When they came closer I guess they realized it was an air gun (sound probably), so they walked in and after a few minutes of discussions pretty much said it's better to do it in the basement or somewhere on a farm.

I don't know if there were any changes to these laws since few years back but gun fires at under 500FPS and I couldn't find any municipal laws prohibiting discharging it within city limits (outdoors)..anyone had any experience with this?

PS. Yes they can be dangerous, but if you handle them right and know what you're doing then they're pretty safe. They could take an eye out but then again so can a finger..

As far as I know, you're not allowed to fire a pellet gun within city limits in the open. Only on farmland (if ti's secluded) and within your garage/basement.

Some municipalities have law(s) like that but I don't think it's provincial/federal law..?

None of the 4 cops that came didn't know much about it, basic consensus was that it's not worth the hassle (someone might see you, think it's a real gun, cops must show up..)

Once my alarm went off in my house and cops came by... I had a peller rifle in a corner they saw it asked me why i had it there... I said that I was shooting in my garage... and they said that you cannot store it like that it should be locked away. I was shooting it in my Backyard, and neighbours were suspiciously looking few times... they were not really friendly... so I stopped doing that.

As far as storage that's for firearms, and air guns are not considered firearms as long as max velocity is under 500FPS (in Canada you can't even get air guns with higher velocity).
