Since Matthew told me that if reverse starts engaging very slowly or not at all this is a symptom of a tranny failing or in need of maintenance... so now I am more aware when I shift into reverse.
Since you're curious, he did mentioned that the other common failure was loosing 4th gear but I think everyone would notice that one happening. The only way to avoid damage and to prolong the tranny is to replace the oil and fluid but then again it stands to reason that if the damage has already been done then you more than likely have to pay the piper.
Special thanks to the the Thread Starter "georgost", if he hadn't started this thread I may not have gotten around to getting the tranny service done.
Thanks to europrince as well for his input, it really helped me make up my mind.
