How easy is it to steal a Bimmer?
Ok, let me first acknowledge that any vehicle can be stolen at any given time, etc.
A friend of mine had bought an X3 about a month ago and just found out that it got stolen. My question is don't the beemers have a competent anti-theft device?
Just a question.

not sure what the problem is with my question..I figure why not ask in a beemer forum?
fyi, i have a 325i but never even questioned the security system. Since it's happened to my friend, it made me wonder how safe are these cars?
Again, what's the problem with my question?????

If a professional wants to steal a car, he'll find a way to steal it.
Alarms don't work as effectively as they used to.

Let the old post pimps complain. Nothing wrong with your question. But it would have been nicer if you introduced yourself first.
Anyway. There is no car that is safe when it comes to stealing. Alarms are there just to warn you and most antitheft systems simply delay the thief to increase the possibility he gets caught. These guys know their stuff and know what they can get away with. My best advice is to try and make their job as hard as possible and try and avoid putting yourself or car in a potition that it asks to be stolen. e.g: dont park your car in dark secluded areas, dont leave stuff in clear view, fit the best alarm you can afford and so on.

New cars have various versions of EWS security which is basically a RFID chip utilizing SSL encryption to send a "signal" to your car when the chip (which is located in the key) is near the ignition.
I dont know anything about the X3 specifically, but if you're diligent (meaning, you know/want to spend 150 hours reading, and 3-4K ordering tools from russia) you can steal any bmw you want.
Welcome to max!
Having said that, if i see you stealing my car, it'll rain bullets.

If someone wants a car, they will get it! Even if they have to do it a gunpoint!
Towtruck is another easy way...takes seconds to hook, and then they have all the time they need to go arround the EWS etc...

My old man couldnt start my 7 with the key, I dont know how it would get stolen without it. But if someone wants it, its possible.

Ya I doubt people really look twice when soemone is hitching up a car and taking it out of a parking lot.
I had the city move my truck before on me when they were re paving a road, set my alarm off and everything...
