Nice pictures... You should work a little bit on framing the subject.
BTW, the canon will be much sharper then that tamron zoom.
If you're shooting indoors, with a tripod, the best way is to use mirror lockup with a timer and shoot as at a hight f-stop. e.g. f/11 or f/16. Your exposure might be a few seconds depending on ISO.
Another technique is to use an off-shoe flash cable and hand hold the flash from the side to give the subject a more 3-dimensional appearance. Each type of photography has its own techniques...
