I've been to a few events last year, you do get a practice run which is not counted.
You then have 4 timed runs and your best time for the day counts towards your standings.
Registration Starts at 9am i believe, a course walk is also done and and the first car leaves the gate at 9:30? (i think...or could be 9am). Depending on the number of cars there could be a 20min-45min wait between runs. and typically the day ends around 1-3pm, again depending on the amount of cars that show up.
The courses are usually pretty low speed, mostly first gear, some courses with longer straights may allow for a quick 1-2 shift, but majority of the courses last year was done in 1st gear for me. Some ppl find it to be limiting and low speed (not as much fun), but it is good for begineers and I had fun.
