I don't take mine off my policy or else it will never go back on due to their stupid 20 year rule. So, I just drive it all year round. Problem solved.
I'm with Belair Direct BTW. They suck with older cars.

My insurance company asked me for the same thing. So as directed by them I found an auto appraiser in the phone book. A $100 later and a good coat of looking at gave me an appraisal that I didn't think was detailed enough but apparently was good enough for the insurance company. I'm sure you can find an appraiser for less than $400.
Any on the board?

i never had this problem.. my car was 20 they just asked from an appraisal.. so i went to the dmv got a slip for an appraisal got my local cetified mechanic to look at it and tell them what he thinks its worth.. they took that with no problem. this was like the beginning of the summer though so it may have changed.

when storing with belair direct i don't cancel, just get minimum coverage, costs about $7/month and there is no reinstatement fees. if you don't cancel with them, they wont ask for an appraisal if you are over 20.
The storage coverage is almost meaningless, but if your Pbrake fails and the car rolls out of the garage into your neighbor's Delorean, you're covered.

i have Belair Direct, you might need to have it insured for a while before you store it, not sure. But I have one of my iX's stored right now and its only ~ $7/mo

I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but I "suspend liability" coverage on my E30 during the winter months. That way, insurance is never really "cancelled" but simply put on hold.
