Gas tank leaking!

All ready for work this morning, walk out to my car, hey! there's a puddle underneath that smells like gas! It is coming down the backside of the tank, on the drivers side.

For sure a pinhole leak, right? The tank is almost full. Is there any sealant product i could use? Fiberglass wouldnt do the trick, would it?

Im not afraid to drop the tank, problem is, my catback is welded on, and i dont know if the front half has ever been off. Yay siezed exhaust bolts! Anyhow.

A new gas tank probably isnt available online, right? Does anyone have a GOOD used one that they're willing to give up?

These are some instructions i found:
Remove Exhaust
Remove Heat Sheilds
Remove Driveshaft
Drain Remainder of Gas from tank into a container, there is a plug typically on the passenger side of tank.
Remove lines from filter, filler, pumps.
Disconnect Wires
Then there are 6 or 8 17mm bolts that hold the tank to the body. It should drop out somewhat easily if you have everything disconnected.

NINJA EDIT: a new one from the dealer is $993+tax. OMFGWTHBBQSAUCE. special order from germany my ass.

Make sure you get the 88+ tank. BM1B I think is the number.

The BM1A tanks come on the earlier cars up to 87, as well as the M3, and the 91 318iS.

Yah i forgot to say, tdot_e30's tank is a 55L tank, not the 60L one. If you're having trouble finding one you can take your gaz tank to a gas tank repair place and they should be able to patch it up unless its rusted to shit. If you want new, my bro bought a non-OE 55L tank awhile ago for about 250ish just to give you an idea.

This isn't going to be hugely helpful but the Grassroots Motorsport guys have an on-going spec E30 project and they had to replace the tank. They found an aftermarket one on ebay for something silly like $100 and said it had great quality and fit.

That being said, it could be any number of things... and not all of them are the gas tank! Is the tank wet with gas itself? Or is it a soft fuel line that's wet?

It could be a fuel filter or a busted line. I'm not sure if your car is old enough to have one (my 87 did) but older cars came with some funky valve thingy that went inline with the fuel line with the fuel fiter right in that area. Even BMW says to bypass it if it leaks so I dunno wtf it's for but as it gets old, it leaks - that's the only function I'm aware of.

Try everything you can to avoid dropping the gas tank. It will be a monster undertaking, testing your will and patience like nothing else you've done before. The sequence may seem simple but it's for a shiny new car - for all others, the sequence needs to be modified to add things like:

x) round off rusted bolt
y) attempt to figure out how to grind it off without igniting fuel
z) give up, cut hole and worry about somehow repairing later

are you sure that theres a hole? I had similar problem where i leaked gas on full tank, ended up being the seal around the fuel pump.

The gas is coming down the BACK of the tank on the drivers side. Im gonna get it up on a lift this evening and take a look. Kinda hard in the driveway. I am pretty sure its not a line, but thats what im hoping. It only started a few days ago.

It possibly be the line(s)? that runs along the top of the gas tank....If you have that second access hole on the back seat behind the driver's seat take a look up there....It's in the area where your leak is.

I bought a brand new tank from this company in Canada on the East Coast. They shipped it and I don't remember it being offensive at all. I thought it was $300 to $400 shipped or something like that........... BRAND NEW. It's not OEM though. Email me at work and I'll look it up to see if I still have their info somewhere.

well guys, i found the leak. its the weld between the top+bottom halves, drivers side back. tominizer, ill email you. and BigD - i tried searching for e30 tank on ebay and didnt turn up anything. perhaps i should try again. <400 shipped i can do, for a brand new tank.

on a brighter note, i replaced my outer ball joints today!! *#$&# things were stuck in so hard, needed a 20 ton press + a torch to get them out. for future reference - the control arms are very very easy to take off. so just do it.

Here you go man:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/BMW-325i-NEW-GAS-...QQcmdZViewItem

(they have them for other model E30s too)

I'm pretty sure that's them, I'll double check the GRM issue, the name does ring a bell.
