I just ordered E36 Coilovers for my E30......

Hi,


I finally ordered my OBX coilovers for my E30 and new Randy had done them on his car and I already posted about it once but I had some more ?s.

Do I only need to weld the front coil sleeves on or do I need to weld both front and rear on?

Does cutting the front perch only allow me to adjust the ride height more?

With the coilovers all the way down how low are you to the ground with your GTS kit?

When I install them how will I get a jack under my car?

Madison,

Neither front nor rear sleeves are welded (aluminum on steel) you're right about the added adjustment on the front if the stock perch is torched off. The pics of my car sitting on the grass... the coilovers are able to go down a further 1.3"!!!! Obviously not really possible with the large Rieger kit on. so all i need to do is cut the perch off? at what point? just below the perch? and I dont need to tack weld them on? Ive been putting that job off for a while. I want the front on the ground!

Madison and Randy I don't get it.. why go with E36 coilovers.. what's the price on the kit and what does it include? I'm thinking about changing my suspension setup to something more aggressive and adjustable ..i have eibach sport kit right now

on the OBX box, it say both E30/E36... and since they have similar setups I don't see why they wouldn't (and didn't) work. The spring rates might be in question, but compared to the "E30" Ground Controls I had on prior, the OBX were a lot more street friendly with a decent ride.

When you torch off the stock perches (don't try this on the car please) you'll have to somehow make a lip so the sleeves rest on it since you can't weld Aluminum to the steel perch. Either a bead of weld or tack on an old brake line around the strut (do a good job, the weight of the front is on there).

Ryan, the price of the kit is around $260.00 CDN.... depending where you get it.... remember, they're just sleeves/springs, not "true" coilovers with shocks.

Thanks Randy..

so the springs arn't too stiff but they won't bottom out? any other trick mods to the suspension.. like rear control arm re-enforcement? camber/caster fixes or adjustments?

so those are the sleeve and spring I have seen around. Is there any modding to be done. Most of that went over my head. the odbx was about 280?. I don't really need mine adjustable so would this be a good route for me?

Guys,for the price you can't beat the obx....BUT

I'd rather buy the GC coilovers. They are really great quality
and you can choose your own spring rates (call Jay at Ground control) The price is a bit higher though....

If I had to do it again, I would get the KW coilovers. They are
one of the best "true" coilovers out there. BBR Sportline in Markham is a supplier for KW. But they are $2200

that's insane Rob.. some bouncy springs for 1/4 the price of my car.. it don't think so!

BTW bbr is one of the most expensive places i've been to.

After having both GC and OBX installed on my E30... i can make a fairly unbiased opinion on both products and say: save your money and get the OBX. The GC's are a little too harsh for the street and you'd almost have to get the Bilstein Sport shocks revalved (or it'll bounce like Rob's car does in his video driving down the 427 to Bimmercruize). The springs are also universally interchangable on the OBX (they all buy the sleeves from someone else anyways) as the GC. Like I said, i've had them both, and the quality is equal... the Japanese can make them cheaper than the Americans.

yeah coilovers can be crazy expensive, but they're worth the money as well if you want a solid feeling ride.
I was lucky enough to find some for under $1000 (but they were stolen hence the price. They were regularly $3500 CDN new)

260 for "coilovers", thats not bad Im still a bit confused on this whole perch cutting buisness

but Ive got other car concerns right now so I have awhile to figure it out

I got the Coilovers for $190 shipped off of ebay. You can't beat that price so I decided to buy them. When I am installing them I will try to take a bunch of pics and do a How To. I think that $2200 is such a waste of money for true coilovers. I am sure they are amazing but they cost as much as I bought my car for when it was stock!

the obx is the best bang for the buck for lowering the car.

it says e30/e36, but s mad for the e36 wieght and so fourth. they will make the car low.. actually slammed when i did it to randys car.

here is the trick steve, for the front.
make sure the shock is removed from the strut housing.
take a cutting disc and cut the lower perch, but leave a lip from the origional perch. that will be your base. the sleeve from the coilover kit will be too long. you will have to put the shock back in and install the locking nut. the distance from the perch and the bottom part of the lock nut is the length of the sleeve. remove the shock and nut and cut the sleeve that length and slide it over the strut housing. then install the shock and the locking nut should now be tight. the sleeve should not lift off now. the rest is self explanitory.

for the rear... you will need to have a machinist (do you anyone randy? ) and bore the center part of the sleeve to fit over the lower control arm raised nipple (sounds sexual )
the sleeve will fit snug and you may have to try it out a couple of times to get the right height.

now it will be slammed.... but watch your front tires they dont hit the perch...
