Big Problem Need All Advice!!!!!!!!

Hey everyone this is the problem I have been trouble shooting for a month.

I have a 92 325i 5 spd and there was a little fire under the hood i got it out in time very minor damage. I bought a parts car thats a 92 325i auto I swapped out everything under the hood but the actual engine. Also the wiring harness, then i find out after i put it all back to getter that, the engine in the car is a vanos so at one point in time some did a engine swap.

So i think the engine might be a 94 . was 94 when they came out in the 325?

The car rolls over i have spark and fuel but it wont kick at all, I have been doing so much research and i found that people say a non-vanos harness will not work a vanos engine if some on could tell me that its for sure then im in need of a vanoe engine wiring harness.

THanks Shawn

Yes, I believe you need the wiring harness for the vanos engine.

92 had no vanos
93 to 99 had vanos

92 - 95 : m50 (OBDI)
96 - 99 : m52 (OBDII)

Your previous car was a 92 so it would not have been converted to OBDII.

Are there any differences in the two harness OBD I and II so i can make sure im getting the right one and also how can u tell whether its standard or auto.

and also i think i discovered what engine is in my car its from a e34 525i, i found a vin on the ecu and it came up 92 525i. In my 92 325i now what kind of harness am i going to need.

What model DME (ecu) do you have is it a 413 (the part number ends in 413)?

You need an ODB1 harness from a 93-95 325, as well as the 413 red label DME. Are you sure you got a vanos engine? How do you know?

Yes they are, the OBD 2 is almost worthless (eveybody needs OBD 1 for swaps) but i dont remember what the obvious differences are...The auto/5spd is very clear, the standard has one plug for a computer, and the auto has 2 (one for engine and one for transmission)...but it shouldnt be much of a problem, as you can use an auto on 5 spd (you just dont use one plug).

I think you should just swap the motor for the the non vanos one...

THe ecu that came with my car when i bought it came with a 413 ecu and my parts car is a 402. I checked the vin on the ecu it saying it form a 92 525i auto in my 325i 5 spd.

Can i get any harness from a OBDI 525 vanos or a 93-95 325i vanos will both harness work for my car.
My car has vanos from the hump on the top on the motor and my parts car doesnt have one.
I have the wiring form a non vanos in my car right now but it wont run but i have fuel and spark.

Yes, the MAF is different too, but you should already have that since your car already had vanos. Just get the correct wiring harness.
