so headgasket, heater core, fan clutch or all of the above?
-
driving last night -22, didn't really want to
ended up being out later & longer with it then planned.
anyways car fell on its face gassing it 1time, I heard a backfire on the decel.
boosted 93 318is (obd1) @8lbs, btw
then i noticed obscene amounts of carbony smelling smoke pouring out at idle!
not really any while under accel, just at idle. headgasket perhaps?
stopped at a friends, hung for a bit then left. 20mins later im like why don't i have heat?
then it kicked on for a bit, then ice cold air again ( heater core)..??
then about 10mins later Temp Gauge went into the red,
until i got to like a 100kph+ then the needle would drop ( fan clutch, water pump)??
so yeah, didn't even check the coolant level yet today.
I wonder what died: hgasket or w.pump or both? thoughts, ideas?

Yikes, that woulda tripped me out!
Can't be the fan clutch since the car overheated...They only break by becoming basicallly clutchless, matching rpms cause they get stuck.

or like some1 posted with the 5series the fan blades can shoot off when the clutch goes, shooting the fan blades through the hood.
I had a fan clutch go way back on my 85 e30 318i. it would over heat in traffic, unless you blasted the heat or drove.
but i didn't even have any heat in the e36. makes me think H.Gasket..
only cause i didn't get gobs of steam in cabin from a shot core,
if bimmer h.cores go anything like dubs?

Same deal with my car happened last summer thou... Replaced heater core and that didn't fix my problem so I dug a little deeper and replaced the head gasket which seemed to have stop the leaking and overheating but while I was gettin to my headgasket there were 2 broken in half blown out screws that hold the head down.. So too much presure? I'm not sure but when you find out let me know. I'm planning on going back to work on it when it gets warmer.

people it makes baby jesus cry when you drive with your car overheating. just tow it, CAA is so cheap.
did you look at your coolant?
touch (carefully) your rad. If its cold, its most likely your waterpump. Replace both waterpump and thermostat, not expensive.
cars run kindof shitty in the winter, i wouldn't sweat that too much. Look for oil in your coolant. If you have some, you're a little ****ed

^ wait for Caa... Lol it was minus 22!
it was more like Aghhhh keep running u Wh()re! must make it too warmth! flog, flog
--
yeah so: no coolant explosions in bay. so hoses are dry looking
undid rad cap.. lots of pressurization noises, did it for like 10seconds too!
coolant was a bit below min levels. didn't see any oil in the coolant.
should the fan move freely when the car is off?.
bah nm, i forgot the thing should've been replaced deleted in the fall.
even had a new lower temp t-stat.
*striker (raph) had spotted some coolant driplets near core when diagnosing/replacing dead a h.fan,
back in the late fall?
... so will need to tow it somewhere i guess eventually.

So hey everybody long time no post
yeah life kinda got in the way of me having time to even read let alone post.
quick rundown on the current sad state of my once awesome car.
- by about mid april I got the car towed
- by may it had been diagnosed as the Head Gasket
- ordered a MLS metal h.g off of ebay. took 1.5months to arrive
- now its mid june, then july. guy was doing everything but my car
- guy put a twin turbo motor into his n/a 911, then custom fabbed his rear grill for an intercooler
- fixed ahmeds car (jamil20) & everyone else on his customer list.
- then tells me something about my 6month old New Turbo mani being warped
- and he's frusrated cause he had it on & off a few times..before ever putting a straight edge to it.
- hes frustrated!? shit i just paid well over a few g's for it (whole new kit) like 6months prior
- I call the builder of it. he flies to where my car is at. takes the mani has it back shaved & straight in 48hrs.
- that was early mid august...then dude was puttering with ac fans & pcv stuff
ac fan & pcv fiasco's. last summer i had planned to delete the stock clutch fan - guy is all on me to order a $280 stock ac fan over an aftermarket one for $100...
- because it had a Housing that channeled air really well, stock mounting etc.
- So he gets it but guess what intercooler is in the way! so theres $180 over an aftermarket fan
- he had to somehow mount it to the inside of the rad facing the motor..
- guess thats 'mechanicaly' easier then welding some pipes & adjusting the intercoolers position
- also my fan relay is only working on full. he said he'd get to it later.
- Then he started messing with the pcv valve
- I had a K&N filter on it & it was right to atmosphere.
- I was getting massive fumes in the car & windows were being fussy, so i was choking
- anyways he gets it into his head that he must, has to re-attach the pcv to the intake
- Im like But you have to Put a one way Check Valve or else you'll be putting 8-12lbs of boost into my head
- 'uhh...oh yeah. he proceeded to do it anyways!!
- hes like now when the car Decels there's huge clouds of black smoke!
- he redoing the Profile gasket now... well over the last 2 weeks. turning into 3
- he at least admitted that putting the boost through the head might be why.
well at least he's test driven my car a few times over the summer.
anybody got $10K (stock seats & some wheels) ? my loss your gain..
anybody that knows the full abuse i've taken just rying to pay to have a cool car
will hopefully have some sympathy for me ...
the rest will tell me i deserve it cause i did not posses the knowledge & or skill to do this myself.
pre-fab'd manis didn't exist 4years ago other then mosselmans kit $8K u.s.
& i've only welded a candlestick holder in grade 8 like 20+years ago.
bears chopped 6 mani is something i really wish i had thought of...
well this has been theraputic (typing it all out) anybody got a gun so i can end myself, lol?

I had the same problem with the M3. However at the end it ended up to be a cracked head.
