catalytic converter question

my Cat needs to be replaced and the oem is really expensive, i was wondering if i take a universal cat converter and weld it. Would that work and pass e test? or my only option to put the oem back?

don't get cheap cats my bought my e36 with cheap cats and sounds like shit lol kinda like a ricer but i also depends on what make of cats u get
