automatic to standard swap question...ye

well

i want to get another e30
and in the event i find one in good shape and cheap($$) but just happens to be automatic, i already have ALL the required for a manual swap (all the components clutch tranny driveshaft differential, etc) from mycurrent busted e30

im just wondering

if anyone one has done such a swap in the e30

....would it be difficult to do this swap? at home?

Its all pretty much a bolt-on swap, with some minor wiring required to get rid of the neutral thingy autos have. Search around i think there is a list of all the parts you need for the swap. You can do it at home but it will be a bitch removing that ugly auto box and putting in the 5spd on the floor. It is 100 percent doable though.

It's something you can do on your driveway with 4 tall jack stands and a cherry picker.

I've done it on my convertible on jack stands. Didn't pull the engine, instead choosing to drop the tranny from below using a floor jack. Trickiest part was the tranny bolts on top, need a very long extension and a friend. Pedal assembly is a PITA but not phsyically hard.

Pulled my tranny this summer in my driveway on stands and with a floor jack. Biggest problems I ran into were the starter bolts and the top belhousing bolts. Swivel extensions/universal joints saved me on that job. Didn't take all that long either, my exhaust came off pretty easily luckily. I didn't have to do the conversion but I think the hardest part of the job will be physically removing/reinstalling the trans. Just make sure to drain them, especially the autobox before removing, it will make your life easier.

I held the back of the engine with it. Not a mandatory item though, as the engine doesn't drop that much.

can also use floor jack with wood blocks under oil pan (or scissor jack from another car like i did)

no need to pull out the motor!!!!!
because of the age of the car now im forced to get an 89, 90, or 91 e30 cuz insurance wont insure 88 or older

i would suppose the hardest part really is putting in the clutch master clylinder, pedals too itself
and im sure i would have to put in the differential to match the manual gear box huh

both the manual and auto's had the same diff ratios of 3.73 IIRC, so no need to swap unless you go from open to LSD etc.

3.73 auto is only in '87. '88 and older got 4.10 with an autobox.
