That's a question you have to ask yourself. A stock M3 is never gonna be as fast as a boosted 328.
The price of a decent FI setup (turbo or SC) is around 5 to 8 gs. I don't think you can buy an M3 for 5 gs more then a 328is, and even if you could, the performance of a stock M3 is nowhere near that of a turbocharged or supercharged 328is.

i have a supercharged m3. I assume you are talking about e36?
Boosting an e46 costs about 10 grand.
boosting an e36 like said by 90e0i, is about 7-8 grand
btw...my m3 boosted is, well fast. soooo its worth it hahahah
look at vfengineering -they use vortec blowers and giac tuning to get you some of the highest numbers for the best price. They also make sc applications for 328s...and m3s...etc..and i love it

If you find a used setup with a rebuilt turbocharger /blower, you can have it for about 3K. Hard to find a 328 kit with tuning, so add 1K for tuning and 1K for install. about 5K for a decent setup.

Umm, clean 328's go for 7-9K in toronto, you can DEFINATELY get a clean M3 for 12-14K.

Agreed.
If you have a 328, keep it.
Do suspension, brakes, exhaust, appearance, etc.
Wait for the motor to go.
then put a s52 turbo in and make 400hp, and then your car is finished.

You can make 400hp reliably with an M52. All depends on how well the its tunned. I'd rather spend the swap money on forged rods and pistons...but that's me.

Depending on how your licence is, you might also save some money on insurance with the 328.

The M car isn't all about the engine though. Yes your boosted 328 will have more power, but the m3 has superior handeling and style. ie. power and heated vaders and the whole m3 interior, the breaks are much bigger, suspention is tighter the chasis has less body roll its a totally different car.

Just boost the M3 and call it a day.
