Question Exhaust help

Hi everyone.
I've recently bought a 428i xdrive and I had some questions about exhaust as I couldn't find any general info on Google.
So my bmw has a sensor just after the exhaust tips. What is it for and how do I avoid not causing any lights to pop up on my dash or screen if I decide to take out my muffler or replace with another exhaust.
Can anyone guide me through this?

Thanks
Amanda

You're probably talking about the exhaust flap actuator that's used to make the exhaust louder when you step on it.
They're usually vacuum actuated, so if you remove it you just have to plug the vacuum hose. Some people remove the hose to permanently make it loud.

Part #8 on this diagram.

So this flap is when I have it in sport mode I assume? since the car does sound louder and more aggressive in sport.

If I remove this will it cause a CEL ?

Yes it opens the flap. If they still use a vacuum line to operate it, all you need to do it unplug the hose and plug it. Some people use a golf tee.
If they've changed it to electric, you may get a code, but you could just plug it back in. I doubt it though as a vac line is cheaper.

Make sure the vacuum line is plugged or it could cause issues.
