Windshield wiper issue

I recently used my windshield wipers and they failed to return to the normal spot. They seem to be stuck about 1/3 up the windshield however they work fine and go all the way down when there moving its only when they stop that they stay 1/3 up the windshield. I hope you guys can give me an idea as to what is wrong because its rather annoying not being able to see were your going.

P.S. my cars an 89 325is

do not continue to use your wipers.

your wiper transmission (that transfers the power to both wipers) is getting seized. Open the panel on the left side of your vehicle, back of the engine bay, you'll see the wiper transmission back there. Lube it up very well with grease, not oil. it will be a bit difficult to get to the whole thing, so you may want a grease/oil mix that you can put in a spray bottle and spray to reach all the hinges.

If you don't fix the problem now, your wiper transmission will break and will need replacement. You can tell when your wiper transmission breaks when your passenger side wiper stops moving, or is broken on an angle.

It's a PITA to change, especially on sedans. (sedan's are usually the one's that end up breaking, which is odd since both coupe and sedan uses the same assembly.)

My buddy had a brand new GMC JIMMY and we had to tighten the bolt 12mm I think for the actual wiper once every few days because he didn't wipe off the ice from the lower windshield where the arm sat. This caused the bolt to loosen, this happend everytime he used it from that point on, it would loosen on its own no matter how much we tightened it. Messed up! READ THAT LINK DUDE! PEACE.
