Steering racks

Who can rebuild them? Can I rebuild them? Where can I buy a rebuild kit? can they be re-geared to a smaller ratio? I know Zionsville Autosport re-gears them, but I'm not paying $600US. I've got a couple leakers and want to fix them.

Scott, there are some places in the GTA that does rebuilds. Off hand I don't know of any, but I can find out. If I recall it will cost about 200-250 a rack - includes inner tie rods from what I remember. That seems a bit steep to rebuild and re-gear.

These guys are at 1670 O'Connor just w of Vic Park beside the coin op car wash.

I had a turbo rebuilt there. I had a problem with it shortly after and they stood by their product so I have faith in them. I talked to the guy when I was there and he literally rebuilds everything and has a lot of stuff in stock ready for exchange.

Just as a matter of a future resource Aarat on Midwest (Midland and Ellesmere) has rebuilt two starters and two alternators for me and are very competitive, organized and super fast turn around. I once had him take my LT1 alternator and upgrade it to the B4C police package for more amps at idle (for a stereo I had). He did it in a day.

He even had my 1985 BMW alternator in stock for exchange.

Anyway there are two resources for everybody to use that I have personally.

Cool, thanks guys... I called a place in Stoney Creek that a friend of mine uses to rebuild brake calpers and boosters and stuff, and they quoted me $399 to rebuild the rack!! Are you kidding me? I can get a rebuilt one on exchange from my parts guy down the road in 10 seconds for $325!

Check out this link, you might even be better off just upgrading. I think you can get a rebuilt one for anywhere from 150 to 300. I searched all day for this, I noticed you also posted in my thread about it, but here's the most recent information. The swap is easy, pretty much the same work involved as replacing stock, so if you going to replace, might as well upgrade right!

And all you will need is this

That's pretty much my motto, replace means upgrade. That's a great post... I'll see what I can find around here for a smaller ratio rack.

Any updates on this, which shop did you end up using within GTA. I need my e30 steering rack replaced too.

I haven't had time or money to do this yet... I have a spare rack, so I'm in no rush, it's just that out of the four E30's at home, three of them leak, and I only have one good spare, so I was just asking around to see what my options were. $325 from my parts guy looks to be a decent choice so far, unless one of the shops listed above can do it cheaper, but like I said, time & money.

Silicon in the end seals works... Just pull back the boot and slap some in..

P.S Take the one out of your E36 and put it in.

Well I know I can't do it myself, I can't even lift the car, but do you think its worth it to tell the mechanic to do the Silicon thing? Probably 1 hours max....so looking around 70-90$

Thanks BTW great idea.

It was a joke... That doesn't work...

I fail....

You need to replace the end seals completely. You need special tools, so people just do the whole rack instead.

Can I have some of that duck tape?

I have an E30 rack that doesn't leak, but I'm tired of driving like I'm guiding a ship. I too want to upgrade to an E36 rack when funds permit.
