e36 V12

Came across this pic ... M V12 (850csi). I didn't think it would fit and even if it did it would be way too heavy. Would it actually work well with e36 body?

well the s70 weighs 165 KG, and your stock m50 in a e36 weighs about 136. so its ~ 30KG difference. Not insane in the least

I think it will fit, i really dont know much on the subject, mabye someone else will chime in.

I'm assuming you're considering doing the swap yourself?

looks like the same car

It does, fit seen it a couple of times.
And no, its not that heavy.
S52US - 140kg
S54 - 148kg
S52 - 152kg
M70 - 150kg
S70 - 165kg

S70 is a really expensive engine, but as I said it before, M70 swap into E36 is a much better swap than S54.
It has only like 5hp less than s54, but has 100lb/ft more torque than s54.
P.S. It is also much cooler to have 354i(s)

I think you should look up from what car S70 is.

Also, I'm sure Rush not going to rip the engine out of his car to put it into E36.

Rush has 850i, which has M70 engine.
S70 comes in 850csi, completely different beast.

I'm not planning on doing it(anytime soon) lol, but I really like the idea of v12 torque in an e36. What would 0-60 and 1/4 mile times be like? I would assume it hard and pricy to find the S70 engines nowdays.

Racing Dynamics sold the K55 'Hurricane' which was a ti shell with the V12 in it. The engines fits fine, it's an easier fit vs. the V8 actually. A custom subframe, oilpan, and steering rack is required. I've looked into this many times. Not really worth it unless the engine is dirt cheap, and you are or sleep with a metal fabricator.

Hardly. The S70 is a tweaked M70 the way the S38 is a tweaked M30. The block of the S70 is the same block BMW used for the McLaren F1 engine. The S70 is not all that expensive, it's just impossible to find... And yeah, it's hardly heavier at all. People assume it's heavier because it's bigger but unlike the 6'es which are cast iron lumps, the S70 is all aluminum. And it generally fits any engine bay that fits a BMW i6 - it's just not easy. I drove a friend's S70 conversion M5 and it still had a LOT of work left. Because everything like the clutch and brakes have to be changed, the pedals were out of alignment (I stomped on the floor swinging my foot from the gas to the brake). To be honest, I didn't like how it felt. It felt like an american muscle car. It didn't want to rev to save its life and you have to change gear way sooner than I'm used to in a BMW 6'er. Sure you can launch it in 4th but the spirit of the car was DEAD. I let him take my car out for a spin after than and even he admitted that he really missed that elasticity.

Considering that 850csi goes for around 50,000USD and more rare than any M car sold in NA, I assume S70 should be pretty expensive. I've never seen the engine by itself for sale though.

There was a student this past Mosport weekend (from Cinncinnati, Ohio) with a "tweaked" S70-powered E34 M5. He was telling me that only eleven 850csi cars made it to the U.S. I think Ted Kalman took some pics of it.
