Overheating problem on e34

Hello everybody

This morining I took my car (e34 M50 525i) to go at work and 5km's later on the highway I noticed that the temp gauge was near the red spot and it hit the spot 30secs after. The display marked : COOLANT TEMP. I stopped at the next exit. Later in the day I checked the coolant level and it was ok. BTW I was not driving hard so there must be something defective somewhere. What could it be guys?
