Knock control test pulse - 1286

So my 1995 318 is throwing the code 1286 - Knock control test pulse.

Does anyone know what this means?

On two separate occasions this week I have started my car, check engine light on, and unless I was giving it gas it would not idle and stall out. I had to rev the car and the check engine light would go out and the car would run fine. Besides these two times my car run fine.

If my knock sensors do go what risks will I run into?

I read that there are two knock sensors. This applies to the 1.8L as well? When I look on sites like it only shows one type of knock sensor. Are both sensors the same part number?
