Yet another update on my car (with pics)



Wheels are on, shocks/springs are in (H&R w/ Bilstein) Headlights are in, Xenon are semi hooked up (just to test)


Don’t mind the right grill, it’s in my trunk right now.. ran out of time and had to just toss the light in there until I can finish.


Now…can’t wait for the springs to settle!

All the settling springs are gonna do will happen in the first 100ft of driving or so.

I am surprised that the E36 M3 wouldn't handle better with a staggered setup. Does it currently understeer or oversteer?

all 96+ e36 M3's come staggered from the factory. 225's F, 245's R.
They understeer like pigs at the limit.

Mine is neutral now, although still very slightly towards understeer. But its quite easily corrected for with the tinyest bit of throttle which you just can't do with the stock setup.

Staggered FTL.

There are other ways to get rid of understeer other then changing u'r rim/tire combo...

Quite obviously.

But running the maximum available front width and matching it in the rear also allows for rotation, a very important consideration for most.

Staggered doesn't belong on anything with less than 400hp, seriously.

Well i dunno about that. I recently had a track day at Shannonville (Nelson) and i wished i had at least 225s at the rear (currently 205 all around) the rear felt quite squirrely at power corner exit. On the other hand i once had 225s all around and did not like the feeling (very heavy steering).
Besides, i have adj camber plates now and could turn up neg camber for better turn in and even better grip at the front in the corners (which would make rear even loser)

Hartge and other tuners during e30 times offered 205/225 staggered combos, i hope for a good reason.
S2000 with similar weight and power to my e30 uses 205/225, again not without a good reason.

However i do agree that rotating tires is a big plus.

What 225 tires were you using?

I've run 225/45/16 GS-D2's and 225/50/15 ZE-512's. Both had MUCH lighter steering than 205/50/15 RT-615's, or 195/60/14 RT-215's for that matter. Steering feel has a lot more to do with sidewall strength and tread pattern than tire size.

Hartge and others were back then just as they are today: "Tuners" catering to well-heeled "enthusiasts" who really have no idea what going fast means. Buyers wanted the image of power, so wide rear tires were a marketing ploy. For further evidence, look at the Evo M3's. BMW spec'd them with 225/45/16 tires all around, even with up to 238hp.
