Protege 5s?

Anyone own one or have any experience with them? I am thinking of getting a newer more reliable vehicle in the summer and this is one I have been considering. I have read a few reviews seems like a decent vehicle but I want to know about people who have had them for a bit.

I would get the 5spd, black or dark blue probably, do the standard mods, lower it wheels and stereo.

I am looking for something I can keep my bike on the inside with, reasonable on gas and a decent drive. Around the 13.5 price range.

Don't worry e30 dudes the truck would be the first to go if it happens.

Very reliable.

My mom had a protege sedan for 4 years, and it constantly took the abuse I gave it. The only thing that ever broke on it was a speed sensor.

No problems with the 5spd.

My buddy has one. He's had it for a few years now and hasn't had any major problems with it.

They are awesome car, reliable, fun to drive ( really they are! good brakes and the steering is very responsive). On top of that you would really apreciate the cargo for your bike. I used to drive my father protege 5 alot , and i will probably buy one as a winter beater / daily driver next summer.

I test drove a 5sp one when they were new, I really like it. Road/engine noise is the only major issue. Bulletproof car.

My bro used to have one, sold it for 11500 about 2-3 years ago when it had 80k so you should be able to get one cheaper now. Only problem we had was the rear fenders RUSTED after a year and a half! But i brought it to Mazda and they replaced everything for free. There was about 2000$ worth of work done, so watch out for that. Mechanically, it was perfect, we had quite a bit of mods on it (Lowered on apex springs, rims, B&M Short shifter etc..) ill post a pic up.

Edit: Wow sorry for my bad re-sizing skills! :|

Really they rotted after 2 years? Thats pretty lame, I would def have to look for a rust free example then nothing pisses me off more than rust.

I will probably test drive a few in the spring and see what they are like.

^ yea, the paint was peeling from the inner rear fenders... I know another guy who had that SAME problem too so it seems common. anyways they are reallllly fun to drive. Lots of understeer, but handle like go-karts!

Ya I have been doing some research, seems rust in that area is kind of common on them, which is disappointing and means I will have to check really carefully when looking in the spring.

Yep, I have a 2002 P5, produced in 2001. It has some rust (but not a lot) in the rear fenders. Also, the area around the rear Protégé5 badge is a common rust spot.

Other than that, it's been a great car for me. Looks good, handles well, cheap on gas, reliable, decent amount of interior space. All I need in a daily driver.

I have a few friends that work at Mazda dealers in Ont and all of them told me that the protoge 5's have lots of tranny issues. Soon after I heard this, i got a customer walkin my door with 50k on her 5 and the tranny was completely out of it.

I have 2 friends that have had major transmission problems with their Protege5's, not sure which years they are but I do know the Mazda dealership had a tough time fixing them.
