Unhappy DAMN, misfiring again?



So I was on my way to Guelph tonight and wanted to do a little speed run. So I'm flooring it in 5th and I notice the car kind of stops pulling at 140km/h... I'm like wtf.

I thought maybe in some weird way my chip was limiting me. I tried later downhill and it barely made it to 150. I knew something was up.

Then I noticed that whenever I floored it there were vibrations, and eventually it was pretty obvious. When I got off the highway at lower speeds, I noticed it a hell of a lot more. At idle, the car shakes and sometimes you can hear what I'm guessing is the engine knocking. Exhaust sounds like it's farting. (kind of like a motorcycle, a slow stumble)

It got me home, and I drove maybe about 200 km after I noticed the problem (I had to)

It feels a lot like misfiring I had before I changed my spark plugs, but that was only when you would floor it, now you can feel it even at half throttle. Weird thing is , past 3.3k rpm...no more hesitation, feels like normal. (I know I shouldn't be revving it but I had to test)

So wtf could this be? Is it in any way possible that I didn't tighten the spark plugs enough (replaced them about hmm 2 months ago) I will open it up and tighten them tomorrow.

I also have a cracked gibo although I doubt that has anything to do with it.

HELP!

^^ sounds like bad coils.. or one or a few spark plugs have fouled.

LOL ^^ even a 318 pulls pretty decent upto 170ish..

Check your coils, vibrations are caused by your cracked guibo.

Well the vibrations werent' there before the engine problems and I still had a cracked guibo.

How can I tell if a spark plug is bad? (they have warranty)

I remember one or a few of the coils had a slight cut at the very tip of that long tube, but until now that was fine.

^^ take out spark plug and look at the electrode if its all gunked up, clean it. as for the coils, listen to them if they are ticking.

Check for ticking while the engine's running??

I just replaced the spark plugs 2 months ago how could they have gunked up already? Is it possible I didn't tighten them enough and one or more finally came loose?

^^ did you torque the spark plugs to spec? remember the head is aluminum.. sometimes hard driving will foul plugs or a rich/lean mixture. If you have the old plugs, re-insert them and see if the hesitation or stumbling disappears, atleast you will know whether its the plugs. As for the coils, yes run the engine and listen to each coil.

Won't the engine noise overpower the coil noise?

No I didn't torque them to spec...tried to keep them as tight as they were before but that was purely based on guess. Could be hard driving I guess (I kind of drive binary), but the NGK irridiums I have have warranty. I can't really put back the old spark plugs since those were bad too, although not this bad so I will see.

Another thing you mentioned, lean/rich mixture. Well that could've been affected by the relatively recent (1 month) introduction of my chip.

^^ if anything the MarkD chip will improve your mixture since it improves the mapping.

Coils: either get a long hose and put one end against your ear and the other to the coils and listen. or put your ear as close as possible to the coils, if you hear a constant ticking on a coil then its on its way out.

The thing about the chip is, it makes the car run a bit more lean, 13:1 rather than 12.8:1, mark said this himself. It's not a problem unless you got leaks in your intake I believe and then the actual mixture is even more lean. That's why factory has it set a bit rich, to make sure you don't run too lean which could ruin the engine.

Anyway my problem doesn't sound like it could be a serious engine failure/problem?

First, test the resistance in the coil. There are three contacts/pins, between the two outside pins there should be 0.8ohms.

Does it only happen at 140/150 in 5th? Can you pull to redline in 2nd or 3rd? Do know for a fact that your check engine light and ABS lights in the cluster work?

Does your ABS work? My car did this exact same thing when I had a broken ABS sensor. It had nothing to do with the coils/plugs, the ECU itself was cutting spark.

It does it all the time, at 140/150 is just where I first noticed it (so it must've failed on the highway.)

I haven't tried pulling to the redline. My CEL does not work (it should come on when a coil is disconnected shouln't it!?), and yes my ABS is showing up as ****ed (front speed sensors are broken or maybe dirty) but it's been like that since July.

Also, how can you say it's NOT a coil if when I disconnect coil 3 the car runs the same, but when I disconnect any other, it runs even worse?

I never said it's not a coil on your car. I said it wasn't a coil/spark issue on my car. Have the codes checked, that should be your first step. Having a messed up ABS can limit the cars speed though, at least it does on my car.

What codes?

ABS codes have already been checked, and are showing front left and right speed sensors as faulty.
