Question WI-FI Using Laptop in Mississauga....

I have been looking to get a phone with an internet connection such as the BlackBerry...

I went to the phone booth today at Square One, the guy there showed me how it works and showed me the browsing capabilities.....

I think that its garbage....

The technology for that amount of money is absurd!

It took like almost 1 minute to load up www.rogers.com

If I get a laptop computer, what are my options to have wireless internet access from anywhere in Mississauga?

Is there like a satellite network card or something that I can get and subscribe to?
What are my options to have internet on the go, but not to take over a minute to open up a page....

Any help is appreciated since I really need others input on what is best!

Thanks all!

Browsing on phones or smart pda's is painfully slow.

As for notebooks, you need to purchase a wireless card. speed isn't so bad, depending on your data speed.

There are two providers i can think of that are worth mentioning, Bell Mobility or Rogers Wireless. Major difference is Rogers uses GSM EDGE technology and Bell uses 1X CDMA technology.

Rogers data speed: 100-150 kbps (about 3 times faster than dialup).
Bell Mobility data speed: up to 86 kbps
**data rates are based on signal strength.

You need to purchase a wireless card.
(Bell Mobility) Sierra Wireless Aircard 555 @ $300
(Rogers) Edge card Sony Ericsson GC83 @ $300 (just dropped from $400)

After you purchase the card, you need to choose a data plan from either provider. I would recommend the unlimited plan which is $100/mth. Rogers calls it 100MB/mth, but really it's unlimited... if you exceed the lower plan limits, the cost is very high.

I use my Rogers Edge mostly for VPN to my corporate LAN, but when i browse the web, its not so bad, considering i'm outdoors.

also, 1xEvDO (CDMA) will be available in about 12mths. It will support data speeds over 300 Kbps. You'll need a new wireless card when 1xEvDO comes out...

hope that helps...
