On a different note, why are you getting rid of your Escape?

Not a big fan of the tranny, cheap, hate the 4cyl in a truck, and I would really enjoy AWD

Some of the Mazda's I heard also have oil consumption problems, but they may have fixed it now by 2011.

LOL, let me guess auto, 4 cyl, fwd. Wrong model to buy. I had an Escape for precisely 6 months when it was stolen! LOL. I loved that thing. But from my experience the models to buy were either the 4cyl manual, (the one I had) or the V6 auto (only option). I've been in few 4 cyl autos and you're right not the greatest matchup I've ever seen.. But always 4x4. The fwd are just focuses, so why not buy a focus wagon instead of an Escape if you're going fwd? (it would be nice if we still got the focus wagon)

Yes not a great engine mating for a car enthusiast at least . Well I'm aiming to go AWD so that's why I wouldn't want a Focus station. If not, I would still prefer the Mazda over the Ford.

Where are you getting that mileage from? He's not talking turbo model? Although it does not get what it's actually rated for, it does still avg aroun 8.5 l/100km. If you flog it, then I can't help you but normal driving it does pretty well. It's no civic at 6l/100km but decent enough.

turbo would be worse...

no way itll avg 8.5. Maybe get that on full hwy trip, but avg(city/mixed) itll hover around 10-11.

they are rated for 20-27 mpg(8.7-11.7). Anyone I know with one(newer model) hovers in the 10-11 range avg. Our STi gets like 12.xx lol.

My M3 so far is avg 9.6L/100km (24.5 mpg)(I keep track. quite a few at 27.x and worst of 21). Sorry for flip flopping mpg and l/100km.

My buddy has a 2010 impreza 2.5 manual. Gets around 11L/100, and he drives like a grandma on prozaac.

I get 12L/100km in my Outback (2.5L) fully loaded: 1 wife, 2 kids, 3 dogs, a roof top cargo carrier stuffed to the point of explosion, towing 2 seadoos.

In city 10L/100km, Hwy no load 8.5L/100km

The Imprezza has to do better.

Off topic, but what's the best way to get an insurance quote from you? Phone? Email?

Anything but the vw. They are an all around headache. I would probably go with the suby from the options you named off though. Reliability isn't too bad, and looks the best out of all them. Not too sure about maintanance costs though.
