Helping my son with transmission harness plug issue

I am posting for my 19 year old dyslexic son who bought a BMW 328i off a cousin. The cousin had previously had transmission trouble and bought a new transmission. He then decided he didn't want the car anymore so my son bought it and the replacement transmission. We paid a local mechanic to do the swap and once it was done the mechanic said, "The harness plugs don't match."

The blurrier image is the old one. The clearer the new plug.

I've got zero BMW experience so forgive any dumb questions:
1. Can I get a new harness that will work with the transmission.
2. I don't know what the transmission is, but suspect I can get a scope to search out some sort of VIN on the transmission.
3. Is there an adapter I could buy(I searched Google and so likely not).
4. Someone talked about re-pinning, but would that mean I'd need to get the male or the female plug (Harness) re-pinned. If so, how do I figure out the specs to re-pin.

Car Specs I have:

BMW 328iS E36
Engine: M52B28
VIN: WBABG2323VET35385
Fuel: Gasoline
Body: Coupe
Transmission: Automatic
