I thought they couldnt put a conventional manual transmission because of where the gears would be. (im not excatly sure but its weird like first gear would be where 3rd is and 7th gear would be where 4th is...not excatly the right positions but you get the idea)


unless they go with a 6-spd.

I say if a cgt can have a conventional 6 speed, there is no reason why the m5 cant.

you are completely correct. a conventional manual transmission can't be done without extensive redesign on that SMGIII gearbox. and that's clearly not going to happen since the sells of the M5 will not likely to justify that.

anyway, as far as i know. BMW of North America and M GmbH in Munich are running parallel development teams working on a 6-speed conventional manual for the M5 (possibly M6, but that's not clear at this point). the gearbox is likely to be only for US-spec M5 though.

True story.

The E60 M5 will have a conventional 6-speed available, at least for BMWUSA.
