Angry Differential noise

Hi All,
I started hearing some noise from the differential when I'm slowing down. so I go to my local mufler shop and get the car jacked up on the stands and what do I see? there is some oil leaking from the left side of my differential...
what the @#$% do I do now?
can this be rebuilt? does anybody know how to do it?
I called a place where they sell BMW parts and it cost anywhere from $500 cdn to $750 cdn for a used Diff. ( Non-Posi or Posi)

Somebody please advise what to do.

Its a 1984 318i and it only has 110K on it.

thank you

Vee

It is probably leaking from the axle seal where the cv axle goes into the diff. I don't think the seals are very expensive or that hard to replace. If you don't want to do it yourself, just call a shop and ask how much to replace the axle seals on the diff, i don't imagine it would be extremely expensive.

I'm sure some other people on the board have actually done theirs and can chime in.....

Good luck

I picked up an E30 325ix 3:91 LSD off of Bimmersport (aka: Charlie) @ Chuck's Auto when I did my engine swap. I had the side seals replaced (they are cheap and easy to replace) but the center seal went. Well I brought it to Chuck's and they fixed it for free! BTW if your center seal is leaking take it to a shop that knows what they are doing because it is very hard to do.

Maybe I will try to tackle this fix on the weekend.
How much was it for the parts?

I can't remember the exact price but just call up parts @ your local dealership.

you can put a unit from an IS in a 318. ill tell yopu what, i just ordered a couple diesel engines from canada, ill find out the shipping from the frieght company, 50buck(usd) and you pay shipping it is yours, ill throw in the enigne for 50 extra bucks, it is complete from afm to exhaust tip. you will need your harness though as i used some of the wires. the tranny is shot. 100usd and you can keep your car running forever, lol. i would keep them but have too many parts and no space. let me know i want to get rid of it and will be taking it to a scrap yard soon.

yes the engine and diff are from an 85 318.

AFAIK the 318iS all came standard with a 4.10 limited slip diff. There should be a tag on the back of your diff with the ratio on it, if it begins with an S then it is limited slip, if not then it's open. (you can also just jack up the rear wheels and spin them, if they spin in the same direction, limited slip, opposite=open)
